New as of 2007--STACKED MOD!!! Two TI RC455P IC ICs stacked inside for clarity, noise reduction, and a mini-toggle for TONS OF TONE options.

Our SD1 5 Star Ge mod includes a two way gain switch that allows you to select between two different diodes for the clipping/distortion section of the pedal. The “down” position selects a germanium diode (the “Ge” part of the name). The Ge diode clips the signal more than a standard silicone diode, providing a more saturated, compressed, and smoother sound with more distortion available. The “up” position selects an LED for the clipping section, which clips less, allowing a clearer, more “open” sound, with less compression, more dynamic response, and more output available. Both are asymmetrical and both are an attempt to make the pedal more ‘tube-like’ since tubes and transformers rarely produce a symmetrical distortion.

NOTE, this is not just a switch to make it like a TS9 as some folks do. This makes it MUCH fatter, cleaner, and more defined, AND gives it another mode to increase the gain beyond what a stock SD-1 offers!

NEW BETTER BYPASS! We have improved the BOSS switching to make it even closer to true-bypass! In stock form these units may suffer a bit of bleed through when off if the level and gain are set very high. No longer! We now have the best sound pedal both on and OFF!

NEW as of January, 2005. Keeley Electronics has made the BOSS SD-1 effect pedal better! Now with a unique twist, the Diode Switch is a standard feature instead of an option. This allows players to get a really heavy sound for pushing a Marshall amp, etc., or to use it as a really fat sounding tube amp simulator! Perfect for both single coil and humbucker guitars!

I got the SD-1 with the GE***** 5 STAR mod. Thanks for the incredibly fast turnaround!

I'm a gigging guitarist and ex-RCA/BMG artist band member, and I've been spending much of my time over the past three years researching boutique amplifiers and effects in order to capture unique and usable tone, purposefully ignoring the typical [insert brand name here] amplifiers and effects. I have sold most of the gear I have purchased; most of it was good, but few things stand out from the crowd and display a truly identifiable tone and response. I have recently found a custom amp builder who hand-builds the ultimate amplifiers. Since then I have purchased two of his models, and my effects have been sold off as their weak points became brutally evident with amplifiers of this quality.

A guitarist I know filled in with us a few months ago with your TS-9 Mod Plus, and I was floored with his tone. I tried it out with my rig, and the response to picking was incredible! So I decided to play it safe and borrow a stock TS-9 to see how it reacted. The tone was similar, but lacked the definition and clarity of the Keeley TS-9 of my friend's. Additionally, it did not respond to my picking the same way - it seemed to "mask" more, which might be nice for a beginning guitarist who wants to hide his mistakes, but is a terrible problem for the experienced guitarist.

Obviously, I bought your TS-9 Mod Plus, and couldn't be happier! Like most guitarists, I use two overdrives: one for rhythm and one for lead boost. I had a competitor's SD-1 with an 808 mod, but it suffered from the same frequency and picking response as the stock TS-9. Overly satisfied with my last Keeley purchase, I decided to try the SD-1 GE***** 5 STAR mod.

And that leaves me here. I couldn't be happier with my tone. Your pedals and workmanship are unparalleled in the industry today. The tone, response, bypass improvements, and quality are the best I have experienced, and your customer support is far superior. The SD-1 with the mod is the lead boost tone I have been searching for, with a wide but usable gain range, amazing fat, tight bass and an incredibly musical two-mode switch that allows me to tailor my tone to the room or audience. Versatility without confusion is a tall order, but this pedal shows that it can indeed be done.
